Fortunately, while it takes CMEs several days to travel from the Sun to the Earth, the light waves make the trip in only eight minutes. Special satellites in space, like SOHO, can detect the light CME ejection almost as soon as it happens. Astronomers can then warn broadcasters and power companies to prepare for an event. Scientists in NASA's Computational Technologies Project are working on ways to predict the effects of solar storms and CMEs on the space around Earth.
