After being blown off the Sun, the blobs of gas in a CME shoot through the solar system. Most of the gas in the blob is ionized, which means that at least one electron has been torn away from each atom, so that the particles are electrically charged. In addition to the gas, the blob contains a twisted, tangled magnetic field. This field binds together the charged particles in the blob as they all zoom outwards through space.
